Teen girl accused of killing mom formally charged

A Colorado teenager accused of stabbing her mother 79 times appeared in court Thursday afternoon, wearing shackles on her arms and legs, to formally hear the murder charge against her.

Isabella Yun-Mi Guzman, 18, is being held without bond at the Arapahoe County Jail in the August 28 stabbing death of her mother, 47-year-old Yun-Mi Hoy.

Guzman was originally scheduled to appear in the Arapahoe County courtroom Thursday morning, but a judge pushed the hearing back to later in the day after she refused to leave her jail cell, HLN affiliate KUSA reported.

Court documents state that Yun-Mi Hoy was stabbed 31 times in the face and an additional 48 times in the neck in the bathroom of her Aurora home.

The girl’s stepfather, Ryan Hoy, told police Guzman spit in her mother’s face and became “more threatening and disrespectful towards her mother” in the days leading up to the killing, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by HLN.

Hoy told police that, on the morning of the murder, his wife showed him an e-mail Guzman allegedly sent her, which included the words, “You will pay,” the affidavit states.

According to the girl’s stepfather, his wife was attacked in the bathroom when she went to take a shower after returning home from work around 9:30 p.m. that evening.

The arrest affidavit states that Ryan Hoy called 911 and told dispatchers “his wife and stepdaughter were inside the bathroom and he could see blood coming from under the door.”

Authorities say they found the mother’s body lying in the bathroom with numerous lacerations and stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:28 p.m.

Guzman fled the home and was arrested the following day at a nearby parking garage by Aurora police, according to authorities.

HLN reached out to the Aurora Public Defender’s Office Wednesday and Thursday in an attempt to locate an attorney representing Guzman, but calls were not returned.
